What is Radio Frequency Skin Tightening?
So what is Radio Frequency Skin Tightening and is it right for you?
Radio Frequency is a popular skin-tightening treatment that delivers anti-ageing results. Read more to learn what Radio Frequency is and how it may work for you.
Probably the most prominent concern I hear from clients during consultations is skin laxity.
Many assume that going under the knife for a surgical face lift is the only solution, there are in fact several non-invasive treatments that are as effective.
One of them is Radio Frequency.
What Is Radio Frequency?
Radiofrequency (RF) is a popular treatment that uses electric current to generate electromagnetic waves.
These wavelengths radiate safely through the skin without interfering with the neuromuscular structure, and are used for aesthetic improvements.
When radiofrequency is conducted through the skin, it penetrates down to the subcutaneous layers, and acts as a catalyst for heat production within the body. In fact, the skin can heat up to 38–40 degrees during radiofrequency treatments.
The action of this heating process leads to skin tightening, firming and brightening due to a contraction of collagen initially and collagen synthesis in the long term. The underlying skin layers are tightened without damaging the top layer.
Radio Frequency is particularly effective on areas that commonly suffer from skin laxity such as the brows, under eyes, jowls, jawline and neck. The skin can look lifted after just one application.
How long does a Radio Frequency treatment take?
Radiofrequency sessions tend to last between 20 to 40 minutes depending on the area to be treated. Numbing cream is not usually required, and there is no downtime as such.
You will likely experience redness but this quickly dissipates.
The number of Radio Frequency treatments needed in a course depends on your skin laxity, but for truly visible results, three-to-five sessions over a period of five to 10 weeks A consistent application of the Radio Frequency device ensures maximum contraction and collagen production, even affecting the more resistant cells.
Who is this treatment ideal for?
The ideal client for radiofrequency is a middle-age man or woman who is beginning to see signs of a reduction in skin firmness.
While radiofrequency alone will help to remodel tissue to lift, firm and tone the face, it does not address any surface issues on the skin. Hence best results are seen when the treatment is combined with chemical peels and LED photo-rejuvenation.
Radio Frequency when combined with Ultrasound Cavitation is also very effective for body contouring.
Are there any contraindications?
While radiofrequency is widely lauded, it is still limited in its effects.
Contraindications include clients who have significant amounts of redundant skin as they will not see the desired results.
Clients with Rosacea are not suitable for treatment as the additional inflammation from the RF treatment will exacerbate the rosacea.
Other contraindications include:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- History of cancer unless approved by your GP
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Active sores or skin disorders in the area
- Wait 3-4 weeks after having Botox or other injectables
Side Effects
The risks of side effects of Radio Frequency are small.
Most people have redness and slight swelling in the area, which usually disappears within 1-2 days after treatment.
